About Nick Garbutt
Nick graduated, with an Honours degree in zoology from the University of Nottingham in 1988. He then spent three months studying Proboscis Monkeys in Bako National Park, Sarawak, where he first began taking photos, most of them abysmal. He was immediately hooked on the photographic process and the challenges it presented, feeling it allowed him a greater freedom to express his fascination with the natural world and convey its beauty and moods. He continued to work on research and conservation projects, including Red Deer studies on the Isle of Rum and endangered bird conservation in Mauritius, while simultaneously developing his interests in photography and writing, before turning freelance in 1996. He has subsequently forged a career primarily as a wildlife photographer and author, while combining this with organising and leading an extensive programme of wildlife photography tours in partnership with Wildlife Worldwide. His travels have taken him all over the world.
Nick regularly contributes articles and photographs to a wide range of magazines such as National Geographic, Terra Mater, Geographical, BBC Wildlife and Outdoor Photography. And through his agents, Nature Picture Library, Super Stock and Steve Bloom Images, his photographs also appear in books, calendars, promotional material and other publications worldwide.
In 2000, Nick was the winner of the prestigious Gerald Durrell Award for Endangered Wildlife in the BBC Wildlife Photographer of the Year Competition and in 1996 won the Urban & Garden Wildlife category in the same competition. He has also had several Specially and Highly Commended images over the years.

Also an accomplished illustrator, Nick produces detailed ink drawings of wildlife, generally using his own photos as reference. These are used in his books to complement and augment his photography. He also sells originals and prints of his work. In 2009 he was a finalist in the BBC Wildlife Artist of the Year Competition.
