Would you line up at a racetrack before you’d learned to drive a car? Would you give an important presentation at work without thorough research and rehearsal? Would you cook an intricate recipe for friends before practicing getting it right first?

Nick Garbutt photographing Giluk FallsYet how many people buy a new camera prior to a major trip or holiday, but don’t learn how to use it before they leave? Far too many! A game drive in the Serengeti or a walk through a rainforest is not the place to be reaching for an instruction manual.

A camera is a tool designed to do a job and knowing how to use it efficiently and effectively is crucial to achieving the results you want.   Familiarity with your camera and a grasp of simple photographic techniques pays dividends in the field and your photography will improve immeasurably as a consequence. Good teaching requires a thorough understanding of the subject and the ability to communicate clearly, especially when dealing with technical subjects. My aim when teaching is to cut through the jargon and lift the shrouds of mystery that surrounds so much of photography and digital processing.

I offer tuition days for one or two clients and week-long workshop holidays for larger groups (as well as longer wildlife and photography tours - click here). Day courses are tailored to suit your personal requirements, whether it be improving your capabilities with a camera, understanding various photographic techniques or getting to grips with digital processing, image optimisation and manipulation.

Always remember cameras don’t take photographs, people do

Puffins on Trshnish IslesThis workshop is run together with my friends and top photographers Chris Mattsion and Alex Hyde, who each bring a wealth of experience and varied knowledge and help guarantee that all participants receive as much individual attention as possible.

The north-west coast of Scotland has long provided inspiration for photographers. The rugged but beautiful landscape provides a spectacular backdrop for subjects as varied as the capricious conditions for which the region is renowned. The Isle of Mull typifies the inspirational qualities of the Scottish Highlands and is one of the best locations to indulge in all aspects of wildlife and landscape photography. Throughout the week we will introduce you to varied approaches including portraits, close-ups and abstract work with different lenses and creative flash techniques. Our favoured locations include meadows flushed with orchids and other flowers, ancient oak woodlands with gnarled trunks encrusted with lichens and moss, spectacular seashores and impressive waterfalls.

Perhaps the tour highlight is a trip to offshore islands where spectacular breeding colonies Puffins, Razorbills, Guillemots and other seabirds can be photographed at very close quarters and without restrictions (unlike many other UK sites). We charter a boat to take us to the best seabird colonies for the maximum amount of time and make the most of the photographic situations that exist.

Moon Jellyfish, Isle of MullMull is one of the best places to see impressive White-tailed Sea Eagles. During a session on a specially chartered boat we will hopefully see and photograph these majestic birds as they take fish from the water’s surface (baited). And further you may add to this the possibility of seeing other shy and elusive creatures like Otters, Peregrine Falcons and Golden Eagles during the course of the trip.

Our base for the week is the beautiful Glengorm Estate on the north-west coast. Here, in the grounds of majestic Glengorm Castle we have the use of delightful estate cottages set amidst woodlands and adjacent to the hills and coast. Deer and other wildlife are regular users of the woods and meadows around the estate.
